2015 Super Bowl Halftime Show audition? Watch GWAR cover Billy Ocean for the AV Club

Last time we checked in on GWAR, the immortal metal monsters were in the news thanks to a fan petition demanding they play live at the 2015 Super Bowl Halftime Show. Well, that petition is now approaching 43,000 signatures, and GWAR themselves endorsed it just last week. They also asked if they could play in the game. Your move, Roger Goodell.

Perhaps in an effort to keep the Super Bowl momentum going, or just promote their new record Battle Maximus, GWAR recently dropped by the AV Club’s studios to once again partake in the Undercover series, where a band is handed a list of songs and must cover one. Each time a song is played, it gets crossed off the list, so the longer a band waits, the fewer options they have.

We’re not entirely sure what choices GWAR were faced with, but their song is excellent: Billy Ocean’s 1988 FM radio hit “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car.”

This isn’t the first time GWAR dropped by the AV Club. Last year they played Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son.”

Oderus Urungus was not amused.

“They got us playing an even more fucked up song than the one we did last year,” the frontman growled. “At least Kansas had guitars in it. But this one, we’re gonna make it pure gold.”
