Twerking on ice: Buffalo Sabres lighten the mood with rookie dance competition

If it weren’t for my beloved New Jersey Devils, the Buffalo Sabres would be the worst team in the National Hockey League’s young season. The Bruins’ Atlantic Division rival has won just a single game in nine tries this year, and the only thing worse than their new caped, yellow 3rd jersey is their sluggish play on the ice. By the time Halloween rolls around, franchise stars Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller could be suiting up for the Edmonton Oilers.

So in order to calm some nerves and have some fun — you hear that, Lou Lamoriello? — Sabres coach Ron Rolston ended a recent practice with a … wait for it… ROOKIE DANCE PARTY! Right at Center Ice!

Even though Brett Hull wasn’t invited to do his famed foot-in-the-crease tango, there were some sweet moves displayed. But 19-year-old forward Zemgus Girgensons took home the gold with his on-ice twerking (we also think he did “the worm”), and given he’s only a year younger than Miley Cyrus herself, this shouldn’t come as any surprise. Scope the Latvian sensation’s dance up top, and check out an extended look at some of the participants courtesy of the Sabres’ instagram page.

h/t to the great Puck Daddy for this one.
