SXSWasted: Boston’s invasion of Austin continues with the two-day South By NorthEast party

Once again, SXSW is turning into one giant Boston music festival. We’re sure other cities will be well-represented down in Austin later this month, but the Massachusetts music deck is getting stronger by the day — which brings to mind my tongue-in-cheek quip from two years ago: “I went to Austin for SXSW, and all I saw were Boston bands.”

That might be the case once again as South By Northeast was announced last night, a two-day, 22-band blowout at the Big Bang Bar, located at 415 East 6th Street. Among the bands taking part are Ruby Rose Fox, Spirit Kid (pictured above), Tigerman WHOA, Girls Guns And Glory, Mean Creek, and a double-shot from OldJack. There’s even some love shown toward Rhode Island and New Hampshire, because New England.

The event was curated by OldJack’s Dan Nicklin, band manager Rebecca ‘Crystal’ Margolis, and Joe Chehade of the Life Electric — the trio behind the recent Radio resurrection news.

“Last year Dan and I stumbled across an awesome room that had no entertainment at night,” Margolis tells Vanyaland this morning. “We asked if we could just come and jam the next night not thinking they’d ever say yes and they said ‘Sure, why not?’ Dan and Richard Bouchard scrambled to invite all the Boston bands we could think of at SXSW to come play, completely unplugged, no mics or anything. A completely packed room and one of the most amazing music events we’d ever been a part of later, we were coming back to do it a second night and SXNE was born.”

The team immediately went to work in stacking the deck.

“We knew that we had to do it again this year and make it a bit bigger, give some a second show to make their trip worth while,” she adds. “So Dan, myself and Joey from Defunct Tees, the Life Electric found a venue in the middle of 6th Street that welcomed us with open arms and Dan went to work on crafting this ridiculously awesome bill.”

The party is free, no badge is required to rock out, and the only limitation is the club’s capacity. RSVP is currently open via Do512. Here is the full lineup:
