SXSW Cares Fund established to help those affected by fatal hit-and-run

As SXSW moves forward after this morning’s tragic hit-and-run accident that killed two people and left 23 injured, a relief fund was established to help the victims.

The SXSW Cares Fund will help those affected by this morning’s tragedy, when a drunk driver crashed through a barricade and ran down dozens of festival-goers at the intersection of Red River Street and East 10th Street. The fund is being organized by SXSW, the city of Austin, and the Mohawk, the live music venue located on Red River.

“We have spent today working with SXSW and the City to create a relief fund for the victims,” says Mohawk owner James Moody in a statement. This is our number one priority — their care and support. We are a community here that exists far beyond the 10 days of SXSW. Our intent is to come together to help the families of each and every one of the victims.”

Earlier today, the Mohawk and nearby Cheer Up Charlie’s decided to re-open at 7 p.m. central time.

“After talking with the Austin Police Department, we have determined that the most prudent course of action is to move forward with the SXSW shows scheduled at the Mohawk and Cheer Up Charlie’s tonight,” says SXSW Founder Roland Swenson in the same press release. “If we were to turn away potentially thousands of people who will arrive to see the shows, it would create a serious safety issue.”

Here are some resources established for those interested in helping the victims and their families:
