In Search of Ill Eagles: Bad graffiti leads to the re-discovering of a Rhode Island band

A news story circulated yesterday about a Maryland military facility that was vandalized because some folks thought it was going to house illegal immigrants. The graffiti on the single-story brick building read: “No illeagles here. No undocumented Democrats.”

We tend to stay out of political stuff here on Vanyaland, but the misspelling of illegals has led to plenty of snark on the internet, with some suggesting Ill Eagles should be a new band — or some dream-like collaboration between the Beastie Boys and Don Henley.

Turns out the name is already taken.

We searched Bandcamp not long after we saw the photo, and discovered a Rhode Island-based indie jazz group called Ill Eagles. They released their first (and apparently last) record, Two Birds, One Stone, in September 2012. You can listen to it below.

The Ill Eagles’ Reverbnation bio describes the band as: “A band that evolves in every sense of the word. Starting as vocalist/drummer/guitarist Matt Dzikiewicz’s solo electronic music project, it slowly evolved into a two piece electro/jam duo. From there, it evolved into an ensemble, adding new instruments and shifting from electric styles to live indie jam grooves.”

So remember, anytime someone suggests that a certain wording, term, or phrase should be a new band name, it probably already is.

We hope these Ill Eagles fly once again…
