Solid State: The Golden Filter return with the moody ‘Heady Filthy’, three EPs

The Golden Filter emerged from New York City’s hazy late-2000s disco-pop revival scene with the glittering debut single “Solid Gold.” The duo then released a string of mid-tempo synth-pop songs that grew stale after a few listens (“Hide Me,” “Thunderbird”) and a record in Voluspa that fell flat despite its forced mysticism and carefully-curated coolness. The Golden Filter seemed to be lost among the city’s shadows and after-parties, especially after 2011’s uneven soundtrack album Syndromes.

Now they’re back with the seven-minute long “Heady Filthy,” which is a little bit the Knife, a little bit film score, a little bit more of the same vibe. It’s a pony with one trick, but it’s at times a seductive one. When looking for someone to sleep with, a simple trick does the trick.

“Heady Filthy” comes off a triple-EP collection released by London’s Vinyl Factory titled Unselected Works, Vol. I to III. Each 30-plus-minute EP has seemed to make its way to Soundcloud, and we’re told it’s all of their rarities and other previously-unreleased sounds all packaged together.

Set aside a good 90 minutes or so and listen to everything — everything!!! — down below. It’s definitely hip dinner party mood music that works until you get bored — or want the other person to leave.
