Outrage: Keith Urban’s MCM concert last night ‘swamped with alcohol-related illnesses’

A few weeks after dozens were treated at an Avicii show at TD Garden, another “mass casualty” alert went out last night during a different type of concert.

This time, the drug was alcohol, and the genre was MCM.

Keith Urban, a part of a new wave of Modern Country Music (or Mainstream Country Music), performed last night at the outdoor XFinity Center in Mansfield. According to reports, ambulances from at least six communities were called to the venue grounds after many fell ill and needed treatment due to alcohol-related illness.

It is unclear just how many people were hospitalized. But many of the victims are believed to be middle-aged adults. It’s a startling trend that’s having a ripple effect across the MCM community.

From the Attleboro Sun Chronicle, which declared the show “swamped with alcohol-related illnesses” in its news morning headline:

Mansfield fire officials requested ambulances from Mansfield, Norton, Foxboro, North Attleboro, Plainville and Easton to augment four ambulances staffed by private companies during Saturday night’s Keith Urban concert due to a high number of people becoming ill, believed to be caused by alcohol consumption, a fire official said Saturday.

At 8:51 p.m., Mansfield fire officials declared a mass casualty incident at the concert venue, which usually indicates a large number of people with potential illnesses or injuries, according to scanner reports.

At the same time, they requested a medical helicopter for a 16-year-old male who had suffered some type of injury and was unresponsive, according to scanner reports, but the helicopter was quickly cancelled and the teen was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro for treatment.

Urban’s Raise ‘Em Up tour now heads to Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center on July 31.
