Drown In Sound: Listen to the aggro new Interpol single, ‘Ancient Ways’

We were pleasantly surprised back in July with “All The Rage Back Home,” the lead single off El Pintor, Interpol’s first new record in nearly four years. It was one of those vaunted “return to forms” and displayed that sharp, concise sound from the brooding New York band’s first two records. It felt like the early-2000s all over again, and it felt like Interpol were… back.

Now, as they ready for the September 9 release of El Pintor and a North American tour that hits Boston’s House of Blues on November 21, Interpol have raised the curtain on another new single. And it’s a bit of an unexpected direction.

“Ancient Ways,” which premiered this morning via YouTube, is muddled and heavy; a fairly relentless composition that’s drenched in reverb and layers and layers of sound. It might be one of their most aggressive songs ever, and it might take a few repeated listens to fully digest. It’s suffocating.

Listen to it below, and check Interpol’s full run of summer and fall tour dates after the jump. At the very least, “Ancient Ways” probably sounds awesome in a live setting.

We’ll see.
