School’s Out Forever: Watch Charli XCX ‘Break The Rules’ and inspire student anarchy in her new video

Sometime next week, millions of kids across America will be going back to school for the fall, riding those ugly-ass yellow buses through endless suburban streets, patrolling dark, shady hallways, and smoking menthol dukes out behind the gymnasium before homeroom (kids still do that like in the ’90s, right?)

Charli XCX wants to be their voice.

After getting “Fancy” for spring break earlier this year and playing Clueless in the video, Ms. XCX is back in action with “Break The Rules,” a true anti-authority anthem that finds the future Queen of Pop declaring “I don’t wanna go to school / I just wanna break the rules.”

Last week we hyped the new single as the lead track off her upcoming Sucker LP, out October 21 via Neon Gold/Atlantic Records, and now we have an accompanying music video that takes the school theme to the next level. Fresh off her live performance last night during the MTV VMAs Red Carpet pre-show, Charli and her classmates overtake a school bus, hit up the lingerie shop, and get rowdy at homecoming before a ruler-crackin’ Rose McGowan — holy cameo! — puts up a fight as the crusty old teacher.

There’s even a nod to Carrie’s prom scene at the end, and the whole thing is like The Craft meets Jawbreaker broadcast in the colorful world of XCX’s electro-pop-gone-punk aesthetic.

Meanwhile, Charli XCX hits up Royale in Boston on October 4 with Elliphant and Femme. Tickets are available here.
