Grimes made news this past weekend when she refused to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge because of the charity cause’s alleged testing on animals. So while our social media feeds won’t be getting any videos of the Canadian electronic artist dumping ice on her head, we will be getting a music video that is inspired by on fire. Namely, epic 14th-century poem “Dante’s Inferno,” and KoRn’s red-hott 1998 nu-metal staple “Freak On A Leash.”
In her new video for “Go,” which features Blood Diamonds and was reportedly written for Rihanna before the pop star turned it down, Grimes gets apocalyptic in both the desert and the club. It’s a pretty trippy-ass clip, and visually stunning.
And there are swords.
“It’s our take on Dante’s Inferno,” Grimes says about the video, via Bullett, which she directed with her brother, Mac. “The circles of hell reflect more contemporary issues though. We shot a bunch at the Salton Sea which is basically an apocalyptic wasteland filled with dead fish because of human carelessness, the bullet hole hallway a la Korn ‘Freak on a Leash,’ etc etc. If you look closely you can find clues. Haha, but in the usual fashion it is also abstract enough to just be a trippy visual accompaniment to the song.“
