Before The Crown: Listen to a 12-year-old Lorde cover Kings of Leon’s ‘Use Somebody’

A while back we heard Lorde’s “Fugazi-inspired” high school band, And They Were Masked, which gave a nice glimpse into the teenage pop star’s upbringing. Now there’s a look at Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor in even younger years, as a clip of her at age 12 covering Kings Of Leon’s “Use Somebody” is making its way around the internet.

The video, which you can watch below, was posted more than a year ago, but suddenly has taken on new life. That could be because Lorde’s curated soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is out later this month (November 17), or because we still, after about two years of near saturation, we still can’t get enough of this other-worldly talent.

By the way, Lorde turns 18 on Friday. So it’s also worth noting that this “unearthed” video of her as a 12-year-old is really only from the late-2000s.
