Two weeks ago we received a massive group message, via Facebook, from Kevin Bogart of Trophy Lungs. The Boston musician was looking to curate a compilation to show solidarity with those protesting recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, and Staten Island, New York, and raise money for Black Lives Matter. The next few days were an avalanche of replies from bands offering to contribute and help out in any way.
Today, the comp, titled the Solidarity Mixtape Vol. 1, goes live. It features 42 punk bands from all over the country, including locals like Choke Up, the Offseason, New Warden, and Bogart’s own Trophy Lungs.
It’s available for a pay-what-you-want download, and after two weeks, Bogart says he will donate the money raised to Black Lives Matter.
“Although current events have helped push the issue into the spotlight, there has always been racism in the justice system and I don’t think I need to explain how necessary change is,” Bogart writes. “The mission of Black Lives Matter is to affirm and embrace the resistance and resilience of Black people. Black Lives Matter is working for a world where Black lives are no longer systematically and intentionally targeted for demise.”
