Dive In: New Kurt Cobain doc to feature ‘previously unheard originals’ from the late Nirvana frontman

There are a lot of reasons to get excited over HBO’s upcoming Kurt Cobain documentary.

Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck’s, premiering May 4, promises unprecedented access into the life of the late Nirvana frontman, and director Brett Morgen has even enlisted the musician’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, as executive director, providing a very necessary and reassuring safety net.

But here’s something else to get jazzed up about: The doc according to a new press release, will feature “dozens of Nirvana songs and performances, as well as previously unheard Cobain originals.”

Well holy shit. We’ve already read the man’s personal diary, might as well add to iTunes all those shit demos no one was ever supposed to hear, as well.

But hey, the Nirvana catalogue has been picked clean since Cobain’s 1994 death, so this is pretty cool news, even if they are early solo demos that have been locked up in the vaults for decades (actually, that makes it even cooler).

Here’s word from the presser, via The Futon Critic:

KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK (May 4), the first fully-authorized documentary about the iconic leader of Nirvana, is a raw and visceral journey through his life. The film provides no-holds-barred access to Cobain’s archives, home to his never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, personal archives and songbooks. Directed by Oscar(R) nominee Brett Morgen (HBO’s “Crossfire Hurricane” and “The Kid Stays in the Picture”) and executive produced by Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, it features dozens of Nirvana songs and performances, as well as previously unheard Cobain originals.

According to Blabbermouth, Morgen said that Cobain widow Courtney Love “gave me the keys to this kingdom and final cut of the film,” adding: “At a certain point, I started working more closely with [Frances]. We (all) agreed that because Courtney was a subject in the film, it would be best if she wasn’t given editorial control.”

Before airing on HBO, Montage of Heck will debut at Sundance.
