Illustrated Sound: Speedy Ortiz announce new album ‘Foil Deer’ via comic strip

There’s a new Speedy Ortiz album on the way this spring, and it now have the comic strip to prove it. The Northampton, Massachusetts, rock band today unveiled details of Foil Deer, the follow-up to last year’s debut LP Major Arcana, and it’ll be out April 21 via Carpark Records.

The album was recorded at Brooklyn’s Rare Book Room with producer Nicolas Vernhes, known for his work with Silver Jews and Deerhunter), and unlike previous releases, singer/guitarist Sadie Dupuis says the band took their time to get the songs right, spending nearly a month in the studio.

“We never had any money to pay for more than a couple days in the studio, so the songs came out very live-sounding and guitar heavy,” Dupuis says in a press release, via Consequence of Sound. And she’s also cut some dead weight out of her life, spending time at her mother’s Connecticut home to re-spark the writing process while spending alone time running and swimming.

“I gave up wasting mental energy on people who didn’t have my back,” adds Dupuis. “Listening to our old records, I get the sense I was putting myself in horrible situations just to write sad songs. This music isn’t coming from a dark place, and without slipping into self-empowerment jargon, it feels stronger.”

Details of Foil Deer today were accompanied by a comic strip by illustrator Michael DeForge, which you can print out and read below after the album art and track listing…
