There’s been all sorts of ’90s nostalgia going on these days, but 99 percent of it involves people standing around with guitars. Los Angeles singer Genevieve is taking us back to the last actual decade in a bit of a different way, to the times when we bounced around in baggy threads to soulful pop music while hanging out on our aunt’s front stoop in the city.
After a few years circling the globe on tour with alt-rock band Company of Thieves, Genevieve is back in action as a solo artist, emerging from Los Angeles’ blossoming electronic pop scene with a kaleidoscopic pop sound that’s equal in depth and catchiness. Her first single, “Colors,” explodes in head-bobbing jubilance as the she reminds us that “It’s all been sung before and you’ve all heard it.” And yet, every time “Colors” is heard on VanyaRadio, all we can think of is how fresh it sounds. It’s the new look the ’90s needs right now.
Genevieve brings her catchy-ass tunes to T.T. The Bear’s Place in Cambridge this Saturday, proving a nice early show before new wave party Heroes takes over for the night.
