Hello Mr. April: The National release surprise new single, ‘Sunshine On My Back’

New York indie royalty the National have just done us all a huge favor.

Today the band released a new song called “Sunshine On My Back,” their first bit of new music since 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me, and by dropping it today and not yesterday we can accept it immediately and not spend precious minutes wondering if it was some April Fool’s Day joke.

Because we don’t think anyone expected this song today. The track, a moody number that should set the tone nicely for a new album, is available to purchase on iTunes and streaming below via Spotify.

As Consequence of Sound notes, the National have a history of releasing new albums every two years, so a) maybe we shouldn’t be so surprised by this sudden release and b) more information is certainly on the way. And as Pitchfork points out, the track features guest vocals from Sharon Van Etten.
