Post-Lightning: Listen to Icky Blossoms emit electro-pop sparks on ‘Living In Fiction’

Electronic pop trio Icky Blossoms captured our full attention back in 2012, when they released one of our favorite songs of the decade in brilliant synth-pop yearner “Heat Lightning”. Today, we a) can’t believe it’s been three years since that mega-jam came out and b) are on the edge of our seats vibing the eff out to “Living In Fiction,” the latest cut from the Nebraska band’s upcoming sophomore album, Mask, out May 12 via Saddle Creek.

“Living in Fiction” takes the best cues from “Heat Lightning” and vaults them into overdrive; a piercing synth cycle blazes along while singer/keyboardist Sarah Bohling’s beautifully aching vocals gravitate the track back to the emotional center.

The band tells Fader that the song “came about in the summer heat of 2014… We were playing around on an acoustic guitar on [Nik Fackler’s] roof in Omaha, NE, when out popped the melody. A weirdo pop jam for cruising around, messing around, night swimming, and ______. You ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?”

No need to fill in the blanks with a song like this.

“Living In Fiction” will also be released as a limited edition neon yellow 7-inch on Record Store Day, April 18, and Mask pre-order, found here, features 3D cover art and glasses. Icky Blossoms for dates are after the clip.
