We Wanna Be Free: Watch Primal Scream perform ‘Loaded’ and ‘Rocks’ last night in Boston

Just around the time the world began to learn about the fate of Don Draper, Boston was treated to the Mad Men of British rock and roll last night at Royale. Primal Scream, fresh off their lethal performance at Austin’s Levitation psych-rock festival and in town for the first time in what feels like forever, dropped by the Tremont Street venue to deliver a career-spanning collection of hits that all sounded like they came out yesterday.

Primal Scream’s 16-song set included a peak-vibe three-song encore of sensual 1989 song “I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have,” and two familiar favorites: “Loaded” and “Rocks.” Watch the latter two via fan-filmed video shot by Mick Murray of In Your Face Photo.

Despite being a Sunday night and the band allegedly spending part of the weekend touring Salem, Massachusetts — can you imagine Bobby Gillespie at The House of the Seven Gables?!? — Primal Scream sounded as sharp as ever, with election tracks like “Kill All Hippies” and “Swastika Eyes” sounding more rocking than usual, and rocking tracks like “Rocks” rocking out more than ever. How’s that for music journalism? Whatever, a good time was had, and the 52-year-old Gillespie hasn’t missed a beat.

Catch some of the action below. And full disclosure: I was the DJ spinning the music from doors until the band hit the stage.

Rock and roll.
