RIP: Nick Marsh, of Flesh For Lulu and Urban Voodoo Machine, dead at 53 after a battle with cancer

British musician Nick Marsh, perhaps best known for his work in ’80s modern rock band Flesh For Lulu, has died at the age of 53 after a battle with cancer. Flesh For Lulu were active from 1982 to 1992, with their biggest hit, “I Go Crazy,” featured in the 1987 John Hughes movie Some Kind Of Wonderful. They released four albums in the ’80s, including 1985’s Big Fun City and 1989’s Plastic Fantastic.

Marsh was also a member of From The Deep with his wife Katharine Blake of Miranda Sex Garden and The Mediaeval Baebes, but since 2003, Marsh performed with “bourbon soaked gypsy blues bop’n’stroll” and Urban Voodoo Machine. It was that London-based crew relayed the news of the musician’s passing this morning.

Their message reads:

It is with tremendously heavy hearts that we must announce that our dear brother Nick Marsh lost his courageous battle with cancer this morning. As you can imagine The Urban Voodoo Machine and it’s entire extended family are deeply saddened and reeling at this sudden and horrible news. Our immediate thoughts go out to Nicks family, most especially his partner Katharine Blake and their daughters Ava and Rosa. A full tribute will follow shortly, in the meantime should you wish to send messages of the support to Katharine and the girls please do so by visiting the Marsh Family Cancer Crisis Fund page at gofundme.com/marshfamily and perhaps leave a small donation whilst you are there.

A message on the GoFundMe page titled Marsh Family Cancer Crisis Fund reads: “Dear all — Sadly, Nick lost his fight this morning. He passed peacefully away, with Kat by his side holding his hand. A massive thank you to everyone who has shown support, in so many ways, to Nick, Kat and their beautiful girls. We’ve lost a good’un. xx”

Marsh reunited Flesh For Lulu in 2013, and last year a crowd funding campaign raised more than $5,000 to help finance a new EP and a Flesh For Lulu North American tour, but neither materialized.

Either way, we’re left with one of the finest alternative and new wave tracks of the decade. Listen too “I Go Crazy” and other Flesh For Lulu songs below…
