The Smashing Pumpkins live lineup is rounding into shape just in time for their summer tour with Marilyn Manson, and it features one familiar face and one familiar bloodline: Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and bassist Jack Bates, son of legendary Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook.

Billy Corgan announced the return of Chamberlin, the Pumpkins’ original drummer, this morning via USA Today. Says Corgan: “You can’t just grab somebody and say, ‘Play drums on this Smashing Pumpkins song.’ Jimmy’s drum parts are so incredibly technical and nuanced that It’s a very rare class of people that can step in and play.”

Meanwhile, Bates’ role was revealed last week on Twitter.

Bates has been touring with the Peter Hook & the Light for their Joy Division and New Order tours over the past few years and will also join the Pumpkins for their upcoming tour with Marilyn Manson. The lineup is rounded out by longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder, and Corgan has said recently that the Pumpkins’ live lineup will feature a rotating cast.

As for the upcoming tour with Manson, here’s what fans can expect: “Heavy on the classics, heavy on the rock and heavy on the attitude,” Corgan tells USA Today. “Those shows are about 75, 80 minutes long, so you don’t have a lot of time to get into the nuances. It’s like punch to the head, punch to the head, punch to the head, thank you very much.”

The Smashing Pumpkins End Times co-headlining tour with Marilyn Manson starts July 7, concludes August 8, and hits the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion on July 28. Check the full run after the tweets.
