Human Nay: Here’s a petition from a ‘Creed fan’ asking the new Rocky spinoff to change its title

There’s a new Rocky movie franchise spinoff coming out later this year called Creed. In it, the famed fictional boxer played by Sylvester Stallone takes on the son of his longtime-rival-turned-friend-turned-Drago-meat Apollo Creed, and probably trains him in the ring and in life. It’s probably very motivational, and we all need some “Gonna Fly Now” back in our lives these days.

But Fact Magazine, Philly.com and SPIN have reported on a new change.org petition from an alleged Los Angeles fan of Creed the rock band who believes the flick’s title will create confusion among the group’s supporters, film goers, and pretty much everyone else.

Petitioning MGM: Change the name of the movie Creed was created earlier this week by Nick Robinson and currently has 114 of its 200-signature goal.

We don’t know if Robinson works for MGM, but we wouldn’t be surprised if he does, either.

“The movie CREED about the son of Rocky Balboa’s deceased trainer’s son, is making it difficult, if not impossible, for the still-vital online Creed fanbase to exchange thoughts and discussion regarding band developments, song interpretation, rumors, non-erotic fanfiction, and deeper insights into the expanded Creed universe,” writes Robinson. “MGM has completely disrespected the Creedmunity by using the name of the still-popular band for their non-Creed related movie and have been stifling conversation by flooding social media hashtags and searches with non-music Creed discussion. MGM should have consulted Creed experts and online leaders before titling this movie. The Creedmunity will not be silenced.”

Some of the alternative titles suggested by the petition include Rocky’s Creed, Boxer Creed, Son of Creed, Apollo Creed’s Son, Rocky: Son of Creed, Rocky: The Next Generation, and Creed (not the band).

“We’re just spitballing here, but hereby grant MGM permission to use any or all of these titles in all territories,” he adds. “We can make a difference. The online Creed fanbase and the discussion of this movie do not have to be enemies. We can be friends. However I can guarantee that if MGM does NOT change the title that no self-respecting Creed fan will EVER see this movie, not even on bootleg!!!!!!!!!!”
