Fifth Member: Watch Boston musician Gretchen Shae of the Knock Ups perform with U2 at the Garden

Over the weekend in Toronto Dave Grohl invited a fan to come up on stage and play drums with the Foo Fighters. Maybe U2 caught wind of that brand of awesomeness, because last night at TD Garden the rock band invited Gretchen Shae, guitarist/vocalist of Boston garage punk band the Knock Ups, up on stage to perform a song.

Word is Shae met the band outside before the show, and caught the attention of Bono during U2’s set. He then brought her up to play guitar on “All I Want Is You.”

Shae’s friend Maddie Applin wrote on Facebook: “One of the kindest, smartest, and (now) luckiest people I know just had her dreams come true!! Gretchen Shae just got up on stage and played guitar with U2! It actually happened.”

Watch videos of the performance below. U2 finish their four-night run at the Garden tonight, and catch the Knock Ups at the Middle East in Cambridge for a Lysten Boston matinee show on July 26.

And here are some Knock Ups originals, from the band’s January EP
