Swedish alt-pop duo Icona Pop are currently out on tour with One Direction, showing North America a thing or two not only about loving it, but also not caring while loving it. They’ve also got a new jam to show off, and it just so happens to be the first track Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo ever wrote together. It was recently re-recorded in the studio with producer Ricky Reed, and it’s called “First Time.”
The new cut has that nice, big shout-along chorus we’ve come to expect from Icona Pop, and it’s part of the duo’s new EP, Emergency, which drops tomorrow via Big Beat Records.
“The song has a whole new meaning to it now, looking back and reflecting on how far we’ve come since those early days when we were broke and didn’t have a clue what we were doing or where we were going!” says Jawo. Adds Hjelt: “It’s such a special song to us and really is a celebration of friendship, whether it’s with your boyfriend or girlfriend or best friend. We just wanted to capture that feeling again in a song and remind ourselves how important it is to never forget those special early days when you first meet someone.”
We can’t wait until several thousand parents are singing along to the chorus of “The first time we got high/The first time we got drunk” at stadiums across the continent. The tour hits Gillette Stadium on September 12.
