You’re So Grating: Blur’s Graham Coxon calls Kanye ‘a big fucking idiot’, compares his music to McDonald’s

Graham Coxon used to spend his time hating certain members of Blur. But now that the reunited Britpop band have smoothed over their once-rocky relationships, the guitarist has turned his attention — and vitriol — to an easier target: Kanye West.

Speaking to the Guardian recently, Coxon let loose a tirade against the rapper when the interviewer referenced, as Stereogum notes, “Kanye’s particular brand of artistry.” When Kanye was cited as someone who represents innovation in modern music, Coxon had some choice words.

“He’s a fucking idiot, isn’t he? Does he even make his own albums? People aren’t interested in learning instruments and putting effort and time into it. They want it immediately. It’s McDonalds, isn’t it? It’s convenient. But all I hear is a loop starting, some bloke starts to sing or rap, and the loop finishes. There’s no shape to this stuff. And the lyrics just seem to be idiotic.”.

Did someone say “Woo-hoo!”?

Who knows if there will be any fallout from this, but we do hope it leads to a collaboration between Kanye and one-time Blur nemesis Liam Gallagher (though a Noel-Kanye collab might be more interesting). Meanwhile, the 20th anniversary of the legendary Britpop battle between Blur’s “Country House” and Oasis’ “Roll With It” arrives in just two weeks.

Looking past that, Blur will return to the States for a pair of gigs this fall: October 20 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, and New York’s Madison Square Garden on October 23. Watch their video for “Ong Ong,” from this year’s acclaimed comeback record The Magic Whip, below…
