Overdrive: Listen to the debut from Weakened Friends, featuring members of the Field Effect and Box Tiger

“Step back, get out of my head,” sings Sonia Sturino on Weakened Friends’ debut single “Won Yet,” before hammering the warning home: “I’m always the worst at my best, I’m the worst at my best.”

It’s a sentiment rather hard to believe, especially when considering the trio’s roots. Weakened Friends is a new project featuring members of two beloved New England bands, the Box Tiger (vocalist/guitarist Sturino and drummer Cam Jones) and the Field Effect (bassist Annie Hoffman). “It’s basically like The Field Effect and The Box Tiger got drunk and fucked and had the sassiest fucking ’90s baby,” Hoffman tells Vanyaland.

Weakened Friends’ debut single, “Won Yet,” is out today; it was written by Sturino with arrangement by Hoffman and Jones, and engineered, produced, mixed by Hoffman and mastered by Brian Charles at Zippah Recording in Brighton.

It’s a fairly incredible blend of the two high-octane ultra-hooky styles of the bands the members are mostly known for, and you can DL the track for free via their Bandcamp page. An EP is on the way, but in the meantime, “Won Yet” is enough to hold us over.

We’re won over already.
