Edge of the World: Listen to Nashville’s Blacklist Royals liven up the Cure’s ‘Plainsong’

Maybe it’s just the oncoming autumn season creeping into our mindset, but we’re loving this recent wave of Cure covers. Renditions from Yo La Tengo, Cold Cave, Kevin Devine, and Tigers Jaw have filled our playlists of late, and now we have a new entry, Blacklist Royals taking on 1989’s “Plainsong.”

The Nashville-based punk duo even dropped a video for the cover, part of the Royals’ new EP, Dead Time Volume One: Songs of The Cure. The full thing, which also features rock and roll takes on “A Forest” and “Pictures Of You,” should be out in a few weeks, as the band heads out on a September tour that hits Providence’s Firehouse 13 two weeks from tomorrow (Sept. 16).

“When we had the idea to do an ongoing cover series, the Cure seemed like the perfect band to start with,” says Nat Rufus in a press release. “Their songs are all so atmospheric, but at their core are these simple, beautiful pop songs, which meant we could basically do whatever we wanted with them. ‘Plainsong’ is a tune that a lot of people who only know the Cure by their greatest hits may not have heard, so it was not only a blast to arrange as a Blacklist Royals song but also a cool way to introduce our fans to an album cut-from The Cure’s best album, in my opinion-from such an iconic band.”

Blacklist Royals latest record, Die Young With Me, is out now.
