Territory Marked: Listen to the new EP from Boston guitar-rock gents Animal Flag

Last month we premiered the debut EP from Bad Dreams, a Boston-based electronic pop project from Matthew Politoski. The songwriter told Vanyaland that the synth-pop-minded Bad Dreams was formed as one of his other bands, Animal Flag, progressed into a more guitar-rock manner. Today, we hear those guitars roar loudly as Animal Flag release their sophomore EP, appropriately titled EP 2.

Listen to it below via Bandcamp. If you’re short on time this morning, the EP’s opening track, the moody, affected, and Afghan Whigs-esque “Jealous Lover” trembles and tilts in just over two minutes. For those who want to invest more, a 10-minute long epic titled “Cathedrals” soars and crashes and soars again like a jilted Bright Eyes. The whole thing is worth a spin, and reads lyrically like one of Politoski’s private journals.

Those in the Boston area can hear (probably) the entire EP live and in action tonight as Animal Flag celebrates its release at Great Scott in Allston with Mikey Holland’s the Dazies and Toronto’s Dilly Dally. Beyond our walls, Animal Flag plays the Tiger Lounge in Brooklyn this Saturday, and Philadelphia’s Stone Cold Castle on Sunday.
