Good Riddance: In 2016, Billie Joe Armstrong wants to destroy the phrase ‘pop punk’

It’s been an unexpectedly end of 2015 for Green Day.

First, the band developed a new kind of buzz with the creation of a new coffee roasting company, Oakland Coffee Works. Then on Christmas Eve, Billie Joe Armstrong and the boys released their first bit of new music in 18 months (and first since being inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame) in “Xmas Time Of The Year”, a nice bit of soft-serve holidaze rock that didn’t really offend anyone.

But 2016 promises to be a bit realer, with a new nemesis in Armstrong’s sights: the phrase “pop-punk.”

Lookout:

It seems like actual pop-punk is still cool and not a target — but just call it something else. Of course, this should be easier than trying to blow up the Starkiller Base.

We’ll see how it plays out. If you still have your Christmas tree up and aren’t yet ready to let go of the season, re-listen to Green Day’s festive jingle below.
