Reappearing Act: Magic Magic announce January residency at Great Scott

One of the better Boston rock scene developments in recent years has been the gradual return of Magic Magic. The critically-acclaimed dream-pop band released some of the better records to come out of Massachusetts in the late-2000s (see their self-titled LP from 2008, and 2010's What Ever Happened to Monday Nights?), leading the Boston Phoenix to name them one of the 50 best new bands in the country, but things seemed to go quiet shortly after.

"We took a break from playing," Magic Magic singer/guitarist John Murphy tells Vanyaland. "We spent time building up our recording studios, Hanging Horse and Taiko Sound. I moved away to the Caribbean to live and work in the Virgin Islands. We decided to get back together after some of the dust had settled -- with a desire to create a full-length studio album and tour once more."

They've only played a very limited number of shows over the past year-and-a-half, but are now set to make up for lost time with a weekly residency that kicks off this Sunday at Great Scott in Allston. This weekend's launch features Horse Jumper Of Love, Lee Preston & The Ghetto Buddhas, and Today Junior, with future Sunday installments welcoming Funeral Advantage, Fedavees, and Condor (all on a killer January 17 bill) as well as Hallelujah The HillsKitner, Twin Foxes, and Chris Warren of Viva Viva.

"We selected the groups based off of our history with them and our interest in them," Murphy says of the lineups, which you can view in full via the flyer below. "We wanted friends we have played with, collaborated with, and supported over the years to come together and play some good shows with us."
