Welp: Listen to Smash Mouth cover David Bowie and Fred Durst sing some Motörhead

Smashmouth august 21, 2001

As world still reels from the one-two death-punch that has taken the lives of Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister and David Bowie, tributes to both legends keep pouring in.

And now we have a pair of covers that definitely won’t bring either back from the dead — unless it’s to bitchslap everyone in sight.

’90s Shrek-rock egg-eaters Smash Mouth responded to the news of Bowie’s death yesterday by blasting out a cover of the Duke’s 1981 anthem with Queen, “Under Pressure”. And yes, frontman Steve Harwell takes on the roles of Bowie and Freddie Mercury. Someone better pass the bread.

On the other side of the ugh spectrum, Limp Bizkit chew toy Fred Durst did his best Lemmy impersonation this past Saturday night at the Viper Room in Los Angeles, barking out the words to “Ace Of Spades”. Durst appeared with Royal Machines, an “all-star covers fun-times band” that, according to Blabbermouth, also includes Dave Navarro, Mark McGrath, ex-Cult bassist Billy Morrison, actor and one-time Nancy Boy frontman Donovan Leitch (!!!), and others. A week earlier, Durst and Royal Machines did the “Ace Of Spades” cover on New Year’s Eve at LA’s El Rey Theatre, and you can watch fan-filmed video of of both performances below.

Yo VIP, let’s kick it…
