Watch Elliott Smith perform ‘Miss Misery’ at the 70th Academy Awards in 1998

We’re all watching the 88th Academy Awards tonight and live-tweeting our faces off, but so far, though there isn’t much music going on — unless you count the flame-throwing guitarist from Mad Max or that godawful Sam Smith song from Spectre. But we are reminded of some musical Oscars magic from nearly 20 years ago, when Elliott Smith performed live on stage at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium in 1998. With a backing orchestra, Smith performed “Miss Misery”, nominated that year for Best Original Song, from Goodwill Hunting. Smith lost on that night to Titanic’s “My Heart Will Go On”, but the late musician’s legacy and performance endures. Revisit it below.
