Get Feisty: M83 announce new album Junk, reveal bouncy first single ‘Do It, Try It’

M83 are back with a little bit of bounce in their steps.

The electronic pop project led by mastermind Anthony Gonzalez today announced new album Junk, out April 8 via Mute Records. The LP’s first single and lead track is “Do It, Try It,” a jumpy little piano-fueled number that’s a bit of a departure from M83’s previous sound.

Promising a bit of a sonic exploration, Beck, Mai Lan, and Susanne Sundfør will appear as guests on Junk, M83’s long-awaited follow-up to 2011’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. “I want to show different sides of me on this album,” Gonzalez says in a press release. “I want to come back with something more intimate, yet somehow with… less me!” He adds: “All my albums have layers of eclecticism to them, but with this album I wanted to take that even further.”

The album’s title comes from Gonzalez’s perception that we are living in a throwaway culture. The album artwork, shown below, is kind of hilarious.

“Anything we create today is going to end up being space junk at one point anyway,” he says, “and I find it really fascinating and scary at the same time — beautiful too in a way. I have this image of pieces of humanity floating in space, lost forever. It also means that nowadays everything goes so fast and everybody is kind of throwing away art in a certain manner. People will listen to an album for instance and just pick a track they like to put on a playlist. They’re not going to take the time to listen to an album anymore because they have to jump on the next thing.

Listen to “Do It, Try It” below, and scan M83’s massive run of tour dates, which does an amazing job in hitting every city in the world except Boston. Also, as far as we know, he’s still recruiting a touring keyboardist.
