Grey Season record release party now a farewell show as frontman Jon Mills announces split

It turns out that Grey Season’s record release party next month at Great Scott will now double as their farewell show.

In a public post made to the Boston band’s Facebook page this afternoon, singer/guitarist Jon Mills announced that after much soul-searching and realizing that the life a touring musician is not for him, he will be leaving Grey Season. His departure has seemingly put an end to the folk rock quintet that started 2011, and last year performed live at Boston Calling Music Festival, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, and the Vanyaland SXSW party with Berklee College of Music. In 2014, they released their debut album, Time Will Tell You Well.

“What this means is that Grey Season, as we know it, is over,” Mills writes. “However, it’s not all doom and gloom ahead of us. Ben and Gooch will still continue to be a part of Honeysuckle, [whose] album release show is slated for March 24… Having heard their record I can tell you, you will definitely want to pick up a copy, maybe two.”

Mills does leave open the possibility that Grey Season could go on without him, though the upcoming run of shows have a feel of finality to them. Grey Season renamed their April 6 show at Great Scott as the “Grey Season Farewell Show & LP Release”. They’ll be joined by the aforementioned Honeysuckle, Lady Pills, and The Dingo Babies.

Mills goes on to write: “While the entity known as Grey Season gets ready to disband (that was punintentional I assure you) the remaining members of Grey Season may decide to continue in the future. Just because I have decided to leave doesn’t mean that the four incredibly talented musicians I’ve found myself with won’t keep working together. Keep an eye out in the future for any news on their personal projects and possibly a Grey Season 2.0.”

We will just have to stay tuned until the rest of the band makes a statement about what they’ll be up to. In the meantime, read Mills’ full statement here, check out a few Grey Season releases below, and note two other final live appearances: March 11 at the Stone Church in Newmarket, New Hampshire, and April 1 at the BAMCafe in Brooklyn, New York.
