Listen to the whimsical indie-pop of Piney Gir, who opens for Gaz Coombes this weekend

Relatively unknown opening acts at shows can be hit or miss, with a bit of a lean on the latter. But when Gaz Coombes plays the The David Friend Recital Hall at Berklee Saturday night, we’re thinking we might roll up just after doors to catch Piney Gir.

The Kansas-born, United Kingdom-based songwriter creates a fresh brand of whimsical indie-pop that’s drawn fair comparisons to Apples In Stereo and Jenny Lewis, and last month released her latest and sixth record, mR. hYDE’S wILD rIDE. It’s a melodic orgy of vibrant sounds, and a really nice warm-up for the former Supergrass frontman’s headlining gig.

Gir also has a bit of a strange backstory, as she was raised, we’re told, in a hyper-religious household in the middle of America, where she wasn’t allowed to listen to pop music until the age of 14. Depending on her age, that could be a good thing or a bad thing.

In any event, check out a selection of Gir’s colorful tunes below, catch up on our interview with Coombes here, and check out Gir’s full run of live dates below as she crosses the country. Luckily, there is no Kansas date.
