Our collective FOMO set in hard yesterday afternoon when Sean Ono Lennon posted the run of show for last night’s David Bowie tribute concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall. The evening was originally planned as a tribute to the iconic musician, but his death in January, right at the show was announced, quickly transformed into a memorial. The list of performers taking part last night was impressive: Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Stipe, Perry Farrell, Cat Power, The Flaming Lips, Heart’s Ann Wilson, and on and on and on.
Among those performers were Massachusetts’ own Pixies, who performed one of their original songs, “Cactus” — which Bowie himself covered for his 2002 album Heathen. It was also a staple of Bowie’s live set in the early 2000s, and you can hear him perform it at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre here.
It seems like security last night at Carnegie Hall was pretty tight, so there aren’t too many videos of the performances floating around the internet today (Pitchfork has a roundup of some fan-filmed clips). However, one sneaky attendee was able to capture full-song video of the Pixies’ performance, shot from wayyyyyyy back in the balcony of the concert venue.
“Sorry about the poor video quality,” the user writes on YouTube, “but it was not easy to record anything at all, not with The Light Brigade Gestapo roaming the halls of Carnegie Hall.”
