Sound Of Pictures: Here’s where to find music at the Independent Film Festival Boston

The Independent Film Festival Boston launches tonight in Somerville with The Hollars, a comedy directed by Newton native and The Office alum John Krasinski with a cast including Charlie DayAnna Kendrick and Margo Martindale. It’s one of 25 feature films, nearly 40 documentaries, and over 50 short films that will screen over the next week at the Somerville Theatre, the Brattle, UMass Boston and the Coolidge Corner Theatre.

And with more than 100 movies to choose from, it can be a bit daunting to narrow down the selections. We’ve been sifting through the lineup here at Vanyaland HQ, and have come up with a handful that should make for a good starting point.

Who is Lydia Loveless?
Brattle Theatre — Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m.

Rather than taking a reverent look back at an established artist, Replacements documentary Color Me Obsessed director Gorman Bechard’s new film serves as an introduction of sorts to a musical life in progress, diving deep into the evolving career of a gloriously foul-mouthed former Ohio farm girl and the bandmates behind her. Lydia Loveless and her group may be on a familiar and oft-repeated journey from tour van to rock club to recording studio and repeat, but theirs is a singular version thanks to the talented, charismatic woman at the wheel.

Director Gorman Bechard and Lydia Loveless will be in attendance at the Friday screening.
