Video Premiere: Amy & The Engine emerge into color in latest Fitz Ross Spare Room Session

With an excellent EP in TandeMania, several high-profile live appearances, and a commanding presence in Boston’s blossoming pop-rock music scene, it can be said that 2015 was the year that Amy & The Engine came into focus. This week, for the latest Fitz Ross Spare Room Session, the band led by singer-songwriter Amy Allen emerges into color, as well.

The aim of the ongoing Spare Room Sessions series is to give bands the tools and production necessary to record a live video based around their own person vision. In the past we’ve hyped sessions from Anjimile and Grey Season, and Amy & The Engine’s new clip for “Megaphone”, a retro-ish, ’50s-pop earworm, takes on a similar vibe. It’s also Amy & The Engine’s first-ever live video.

“Even if it’s through a melancholy lens, I always see love as a kaleidoscope — beautiful and ever-changing,” Allen tells Vanyaland. “So I thought it would be a cool and simple video concept to start the visual in black and white, and then eventually reveal a brightly colored rock band… in a random basement. It’s kind of ironic and unexpected.”

Coming into color also aligns with the song’s lyrical tone. When a realization is had, life becomes far more vibrant.

“It’s about falling out of love with someone and knowing you need to let them go because… it’s selfish to try to keep someone in your life after you’ve ended the relationship romantically,” Allen says of the song. “For me, ‘Megaphone’ captures the idea that even though you can’t still tell someone you love them out loud, your heart is still resounding like a ‘megaphone’ and calling out to that person.”
