Take a moment for yourself with Civil Twilight’s delicate cover of Billy Idol’s ‘Dancing With Myself’

When it comes down to songs from the ’80s that no one ever needs to really hear ever again, Billy Idol’s rock classic “Dancing With Myself” is up there with “Come On Eileen”, “The Safety Dance”, and “I Melt With You”.

But Nashville-based Civil Twilight have given the anthem a much-needed bit of a re-start, and the result is a deliberate, loose acoustic ballad that reassembles the original’s passion.

“I was sitting down with a friend of mine listening to that song one day,” Civil Twilight frontman Steven McKellar tells Consequence of Sound, which premiered the cover. “He read me the lyrics while the song was playing and I just thought they were so beautiful. They struck me in a way that they never had before. I thought, ‘This song would make such a beautiful ballad.’ So we decided to record it that way, really sparse and sensitive.”

Civil Twilight’s “Dancing With Myself” will be available as a bonus track to the acoustic re-release of their 2015 LP Story of an Immigrant, due July 15 via Wind-up Records. The record will also feature two more bonus tracks, “Letters from the Sky” and “Save Yourself”. While we wait, listen to it below on Soundcloud, and check all Civil Twilight’s summer dates, including shows with Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.
