Watch Johnny Marr and the Last Shadow Puppets cover the Smiths last night in Manchester

With combined contributions from Miles Kane and Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, the Last Shadow Puppets are an impressive supergroup (May single “Miracle Aligner” undoubtedly a Top 10 song of 2016). Add the Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr into the mix, and you have nothing short of an all-star ensemble.

That’s what happened last night at Castlefield Bowl in Manchester, England, as Marr joined the Puppets on stage for a starry-eyed rendition of the Smiths’ “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me”. Hell, there’s even a string quartet up there on stage, so clearly it was a grand night all around.

Hopefully, we get something similar when the Last Shadow Puppets play the House of Blues in Boston on July 31.

But it’s safe to say we won’t get any members of the Smiths on stage — or even in the audience.

As Rolling Stone reports, Smiths drummer Mike Joyce was in the crowd when the cover went down. And some dude tried to Smithsplain it.

“So I’m at The Last Shadow Puppets gig tonight and Johnny Marr walks on and they play, ‘Last Night I Dreamt…'” Joyce writes on Facebook. “The guy next to me says, ‘Seen the guy on the right with black hair? That’s Johnny Marr, the guitarist from the Smiths and this is a Smiths song they’re playing.’ I didn’t say owt, I just couldn’t.”
