Editor's Note: There's so much to like these days at Newport Folk Festival, the annual summer gathering at Fort Adams State Park in Rhode Island has in recent years expanded to feature a full Friday slate of performers. Yesterday, the 2016 edition sprang loose in grand fashion as performances by Flight of the Conchords, The Arcs, Ray Lamontagne, and others set the tone for the weekend. Vanyaland's Matthew Shelter was under the sun and down by the harbor to capture visuals of the action, including the aforementioned bands and performers as well as looks at Case-Lang-Veirs (a collab between Neko Case, k.d. land, and Laura Veirs), Violent Femmes, Matthew Logan Vasquez, St. Paul and The Broken Bones, Raury, Fruit Bats, The Staves, and Basia Bulat.
