Heroes By Design: Prince and David Bowie honored with mural outside the House of Blues

Lansdowne Street just added a new pair of Heroes.

A new mural depicting late music icons Prince and David Bowie has been installed outside the House of Blues in Boston. The painting, which has been affixed to the live music venue's exterior to blend in with its brick background, is the work of a trio of artists and House of Blues restaurant employees: Hannah Earley, Meghan Pierce, and Sydney Steeves.

It's a fitting tribute, joining other murals and markers for the two musicians in Massachusetts and beyond. And neither were strangers to Lansdowne: Bowie performed at Avalon in September 1996 for his "Outside" tour, and Prince played two shows at Metro nightclub, first in March 1981 for his "Dirty Mind" tour, and then five years later -- at the height of his fame -- for a secret show that forced police to close down the street once word got out.

Unsurprisingly, tribute shows in Prince's honor are still popping up around town. Tonight singer-songwriter Will Dailey headlines a Prince tribute at East Boston non-profit cultural organization Zumix, and next weekend, August 6 and 7, the Boston Rock Opera presents “Stardust to Blackstar -- The Lives of David Bowie” at ONCE Ballroom in Somerville.

“I believe [Prince] is one of those artists that, 200 years from now, there will be a class on him in a university,” Dailey tells Boston Magazine. “It’s a unique gift to the Earth that he brought.”
