London lounge-pop group Cousteau reforms as CousteauX and teams with Libertine Carl Barat

Way back in music’s former life of 1999, London pop group Cousteau released one of the most underrated songs of all time in “The Last Good Day of the Year”. The gently bruised lounge-pop track was a moderate hit here and in the United Kingdom, and landed in a few choice television advertisements. Good times were not to last, however, as the band split a few years later.

Now, it seems Cousteau’s founding members Liam McKahey and Davey Ray Moor have reformed, playing a live gig earlier this year in Italy under the 2.0 moniker of CousteauX and releasing a new EP in the UK.

The second cut off the four-song record is a devilish noir-pop composition called “The Innermost Light”, and it was co-written by The Libertines’ Carl Barat. In fact, the credits on the song list Barat and his band The Jackals as prime participants.

The new song certainly revisits the group’s “signature uplifting melancholia”, and suggests a fairly intriguing rebirth. Watch the video below, which dropped earlier this month, and stay tuned for more news from the reborn CousteauX as it develops…
