And Justice For Art: Metallica’s Kirk Hammett to exhibit horror memorabilia at Salem museum

Just like all your hip friends and all the cool local bands, Kirk Hammett is making Salem his new hang.

The Metallica guitarist was in the North Shore city over the weekend, beating the annual Halloween rush and preparing for a new art exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum. The showcase, which will feature 90 pieces from the musician’s personal memorabilia stash and open in August 2017, is called “Blood Curdling, Hair Raising, Spine Chilling: The Horror and Sci-Fi Film Art Collection of Kirk Hammett”.

In addition to the Hollywood prints, the Globe notes that items from Hammett’s personal collection — including guitars, monster masks, and sculptures — will be paired with horror and sci-fi film clips to tell a cohesive story.

When asked about the relationship between metal and horror, Hammett has said in past interviews that they are cut from the same bloody cloth.

“They’re just made out of the same ingredients,” Hammett said via Revolver. “It’s just the darker side of life. Heavy metal, you know, doesn’t work if you’re singing about flying elephants. You have to have a subject matter to fit the mood. I’ve said this before: A good horror movie is like a good song and a good song is like a good horror movie. That’s the way I look at it.”

We’ll all be looking at it next summer.

“Blood Curdling, Hair Raising, Spine Chilling: The Horror and Sci-Fi Film Art Collection of Kirk Hammett” opens August 12, 2017, and runs until to November 26. It will be located in the museum’s Special Exhibition Galleries.
