Beyond Rowling: Fantastic film beasts, and where to stream them

We’re excited to finally watch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the latest entry in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise (by the way, is it even okay to call it that when the movie’s set 70 years before he was born?). The film hits theaters Friday, and its focus on magical monsters and mischief got us thinking: What other creature features are able to stream online through the familiar services? Though we’re past Halloween season and creepy critters have, for the most part, gone back under the beds of our imagination, we found eight great movies that we hope you’ll enjoy taking a peek at from the comfort of your home. Maybe you’ll stuff one or two deep within the pockets of your mind before you head to the theater this weekend.

Gremlins

We know the rules: Don’t let them get wet or feed them after midnight. What might seem like ordinary instructions to prevent your average housecat from clawing your face off are actually meant to prevent the cute Mogwai from transforming into horrible monsters. You probably already know how fantastic this movie is, but trust us, it’s time to give director Joe Dante’s classic a revisit, especially as the holidays draw closer (it’s up there with Die Hard and Carol as our very favorite Christmas movies). Unfortunately, its vastly superior sequel, The New Batch, isn’t available for free streaming on any service, but the first is much better than you remember it being. (Amazon Prime)
