Harvester of Stadiums: Metallica announce North American tour, return to Massachusetts this spring

Metallica have announced a North American tour which will take place this spring and summer, stopping in the Boston area May 19 with a show at Gillette Stadium. It will mark the band’s first visit to the region since a sold-out show at TD Garden in January 2009.

The full itinerary can be seen below. Tickets for the Foxborough date go on-sale this Friday at 10 a.m. Presale tickets will be available to Legacy Metallica Fan Club members beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 9 a.m., with presale tickets available to all Met Club members beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. Each ticket purchased will come with a copy of the Hardwired…To Self-Destruct album, available as a physical CD or a digital download.

Openers for the jaunt will be Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat. Gojira will be in place of Volbeat on select dates. Metallica will be supporting their latest album, Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, the group’s first LP in eight years which landed on the top of the charts in more than 55 countries when it was released in November.

And the news comes after the band shared the stage with Lady Gaga at last night’s 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards, ripping through a performance of “Moth Into Flame” from Hardwired…To Self-Destruct that was fraught with technical difficulties.

Though they haven’t undertaken a proper tour of the States since 2009, Metallica have been busy. In addition to doing between a dozen and two-dozen high-profile shows each year, they did a gig in Antarctica (becoming the first band to play on all seven continents), were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and did a series of “Big 4” concerts with Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax. It hasn’t been all positive along the way; they released a concert film to theaters titled Through the Never which tanked along with a poorly received collaboration with the late Lou Reed titled Lulu and curated their own music festival, Orion Music + More – which lost a ton of money.
