Stop The World: Modern English cancel remaining North American tour due to medical emergency

British new wave/post-punk group Modern English have cancelled the remaining 15 dates on their North American tour, including an April 13 stop at Brighton Music Hall in Allston.

Modern English guitarist Gary McDowell has been hospitalized with what is being called a “medical emergency,” and has underwent surgery on Friday (March 24) in Los Angeles for an undisclosed ailment. McDowell was with the group for the opening of their “Take Me To The Trees” tour, which celebrates the band’s first new album in 30 years. He is expected to remain in a hospital for several days.

The band writes: “All of us, Gary especially, are very sorry to have to announce the sudden cancellation of our ‘Take Me To The Trees’ U.S. and Canadian dates. This is due to a serious illness and urgent surgery required for our guitarist Gary. Obviously we are very upset and disappointed to have to come to this decision, but without Gary we can’t play any concerts. After recovering from surgery, Gary will be flown home to England for further treatment.”

Modern English, who are best known for 1982 classic alternative hit “I’ll Melt With You,” hope to reschedule the shows when McDowell recovers.
