New Sounds: Get swept up in Alvvays’ gorgeous guitar-pop single ‘In Undertow’

We’re admittedly still pretty shook over “Archie, Marry Me,” the painstakingly perfect guitar-rock jam from Alvvays that will no doubt be showing up in a few short years on every single Best Song of the 2010s list. Today (June 6), the Toronto band has delivered the long-awaited follow-up, detailing their sophomore album Antisocialites, due September 8 via Polyvinyl, and offering another exquisitely-paced and emotionally-charged single in “In Undertow.”

Get swept away in it below.

“This record is a fantasy breakup arc and my life nearly imitated art,” says vocalist and guitarist Molly Rankin, who on “In Undertow” opens with the following: “You find a wave and try to hold on for as long as you can, you made a mistake you’d like to erase and I understand,”

Later on the track, she sings: “What’s left for you and me? I ask that question rhetorically.”

Alvvays will be spending a good chunk of 2017 on the road, and their long, winding tour around the globe lands at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston on October 3. Full dates after the jump.
