Name A More Iconic Duo: Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile team for new album and tour

Remember a few months ago when everyone on Twitter was all like “Name a more iconic duo — I’ll wait”?

Well we have a new entry that might actually unseat t.A.T.u., Hall & Oates, and Spongebob and Patrick: Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile.

The pair are set to release a new album recorded together earlier this year, and head out on a 19-date co-headlining tour that hits the Orpheum Theatre in Boston on November 4. Tickets go on sale Friday (June 9) at 10 a.m.

Barnett and Vile will share the stage on the tour, playing songs from the collaborative record as well as their own material and “a bunch of classics,” according to the release. Their backing band is The Sea Lice, and it features a revolving cast of musicians: Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Rob Laakso (The Violators, The Swirlies, Mice Parade) and Katie Harkin (Harkin, Sky Larkin and touring member of Sleater-Kinney and Wild Beasts).

Says Vile: “I just love her voice in general… great lyrics of course… I love all her music but the song that really hit me was ‘Depreston’ — I know it’s popular but her voice is so good in that song and it’s so pretty and sincere… i’m a sucker for that kinda song: instant classic.”

Says Barnett: “I’m a huge Kurt fan. Smoke Ring was one of my first purchases on vinyl. I was getting over a big break-up, unemployed and drifting and I would just lie on my bed and listen to ‘Peepin’ Tom’ on repeat. One of the most beautiful and luscious albums I ever heard. Me and Jen fell in love to that album.”

The duo’s new record will be released jointly by Matador Records, Marathon Artists and Milk! Records.
