Look, we don't mean to alarm you, but this is a really big week for Yacht Rock.
On Wednesday, Sirius brings its beloved Yacht Rock Radio channel back to the digital dial, and then, perhaps more importantly, Thursday (June 22) delivers The Sinclair Kitchen's maiden Yacht Night voyage in Cambridge. That means you'll get to experience the magic of Christopher Cross each way it was intended -- first by yourself in your car as you wistfully drive by all the places and spaces that used to mean something to you when you were younger, and then amongst friends in a crowded bar where the only thing you know better than the good people in the room are the lyrics to every smooth jam busted out by the sailor-capped DJ.
With that in mind, we reached out to DJ Lady Speedstick, who alongside co-captain DJ Baby Lazarus promises to spin all of our favorite '70s and '80s soft rock jams all night long. All night long? All night.
"We’ll be spinning -- hard drives spin right? -- some deep cuts early on in the evening," Lady Speedstick tells Vanyaland. "But for the record, we’re just out for a good time. We’re not trying to challenge anyone or ourselves. Ain’t nothing but a party. We hope some people will come down and get stupid with us. Guilty pleasures all evening long."
To get us in the mood, we asked Lady Speedstick for a taste -- just a taste -- of what one might expect come Thursday night at the ol' kitchen Sinc. He popped his collar and selected five tracks for us to enjoy in advance, and dutifully noted our own requests for "Arthur's Theme" and Rupert Holmes' 1979 ode to accidental monogamy, "Escape."
The commentary below is all his. Added details on the evening after the jump.
