It’s been a while since we’ve received any new Neon-Trees-esque bops, but new Boston duo VERIS have swooped in and stepped up to deliver the kind of positive pop that we’ve been missing.

After only forming back in May, musical pair AJ Edwards and Mark Hylander have released their debut single “Opening Night”, a twinkling, effervescent tune about making those vital but often risky first impressions.

The two had previously collaborated on Edwards’ self-titled material, with Hylander on the drums and Edwards providing the vocals and guitar licks. VERIS just ups the synths — significantly.

“We’ve worked together over the last few years, but recently decided to team up as songwriters to make music we both have always wanted to,” Hylander tells Vanyaland.

The accompanying lyric video for “Opening Night” stirs up old-school Hollywood feels with black-and-white vintage clips of showgirls and dance clubs.

“House lights on your face/I’ll never get bored with this view,” Edwards sings at the start of the second verse, landing himself somewhere between corniness and just being plain endearing. But that’s where the risk aspect comes in, right?
